Two weeks ago, we went with family ice skating on the lake. It was the first time walking on frozen water for me and to be honest, I was not feeling very brave ! I was thinking that the ice can break and it was terrifying. On top of that, I am definitely not good with skates on my feet ! But I went anyway and it was blast.
Winter in Finland is still very new to me, even if I am living here for two years. I discover new activities all the time and it seems it is just a beginning. Every winter, something new comes up. Finns really know how to enjoy life under any weather !
I grew up next to Bordeaux, in the south west of France. You probably know it as the wine city. We usually can go to the beach for some nice sunny walks up until end of october, sometimes even later. Our winter, there, is considered cold when the temperature hits around ten degree celsius. If I remember good, we had snow two or three times since I was born. And when this happen…well, we close schools. Bus and cars are not driving. Everybody stays home until it melts ! As you can imagine, finnish people laugh hard at me when they hear that .
I consider myself lucky to live in Finland. Nature is wonderful and that is something i didn’t really take the time to enjoy when i was in France. Here, people are used to landscapes like that, but it is always nice to see them stop for a minute and take a picture. They still appreciate the beauty they see everyday.
Ice skating on a frozen lake is the perfect winter activity for saturdays or sundays, with your family or as a date ! My fiancé is a professional hockey goalie so it is very nice to hold his hand for a ride and never scare to fall ! We stopped couple times along the road to take pictures and videos. The road on the lake was a little bumpy, and if you add that to my not-so-amazing skating skills, I almost fall, face first, a few times ! It made our trip pretty funny !
In the middle of this lake is a small “island” where they built a tent with a grill ! So we stopped there grilling sausages on the barbecue. Kids were drinking hot chocolate and watching teenagers play with their motorcycles. The sun was slowly going down as we took some strenght to go back home . It was time for a selfie since the light was beautiful. I just bought those sunglasses in Lindex, you can shop them here. Since it was the first sunny day after a very long time, it was perfect to wear them ! They have kinda pink lenses so it feels like a beautiful sunset all day long !
In the end of the day, we were exhausted but really happy. A beautiful winter afternoon, enjoying with family, was really needed ! It is a cheap, almost free activity, if you don’t buy sausages and hot chocolate ! But it is so much fun and you can do it as many times as you want, as long as it is cold ! You surely don’t want to end up in the freezing water !
Gear up guys and let’s meet on the ice ! See you soon !
